Tak Matsumoto, co-founder of legendary Japanese rock duo B’z and 6-time Grammy Winner and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ho came to the Grammy Museum Tuesday night to talk about their new collaborative album Electric Island, Acoustic Sea.
Before these two world renowned musicians took the stage in the Clive Davis Theater, a video was shown of Matsumoto and Ho’s very different backgrounds and including their amazing careers from B’z selling over 80 million albums to Ho being nominated for 14 Grammys, 6 of which he won.
The event was broken up into 2 parts with a Q&A followed by a performance of Matsumoto and Ho with their band.
The Q&A was conducted by MusiCares and Grammy Foundation VP Scott Goldman who regularly leads interviews at the museum.
As Goldman said you would never expect to see these two together, it is very true. Matsumoto is a rock guitarist while Ho Is a Hawaiian style ukulele player. However, the music these two virtuosos made is simply incredible.
In the interview Matsumoto and Ho talked about making their album, individual projects, and the future of them as a duo. Ho also gave a demonstration of several instruments he plays including the Bongolele and special shaker.
Their band consists of cello, drums, and bass. In addition to ukulele, Ho also played keyboards during the performance.
For an artist like Matsumoto who has played arenas many times, it was very unique seeing him in a 200-seat theater.
For anyone in the Los Angeles area there will be a special performance by Matsumoto and Ho at the Artani Theatre at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center this Saturday, Oct. 14. For more, visit
